What is a Ball Joint Replacement?

Ball joints are an integral part of your vehicle's overall suspension system. These joints connect the steering knuckles to the control arms, which allows the suspension system to move and the wheel to steer. The ball joint is exactly what it sounds like, a joint with a flexible ball and socket for easy movement in all directions. Every car or truck has multiple of these ball joints in the suspension system working together with other components to move and steer your vehicle smoothly.

Ball joints, just like all other suspension components, do tend to wear out and become loose over time. If a ball joint is loose, you may begin to have issues with your vehicle's wheel alignment or notice excessive tire wear. Loose ball joints can also cause a clunking sound when going over a bump or other noises that seem to originate from the suspension system. If a ball joint fails completely, the suspension can collapse, causing a loss of control of your vehicle.

If you need to have your ball joints replaced, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Clunking noise from the front tires
  • Steering wheel vibrates or shakes
  • Car veers to the right or left, especially when traveling over bumps
  • Excessive tire wear

As soon as you notice any of the symptoms above, don't hesitate to bring your vehicle into Mission Auto Care. We will determine if you do in fact need a ball joint replacement or if the issue with with a separate suspension component. Give us a call or make an appointment online today!
